Science curricUlum intent

Building the Kingdom

Science enables us to plummet the mysteries of the mind of the Creator of the universe and inform our world view through a deeper understanding of the inter-connectedness of all levels of creation. Scientific exploration and discovery help students to recognise their potential and responsibility through the development of humility and the dependence on their ability to discern how to make the right choices. Science encourages students to respond to the big questions of the purpose and meaning of life as it works in collaboration with other disciplines within the curriculum.

Through Science children are encouraged to explore the Catholic Values of curiosity by searching for the truth and asking relevant questions. They will make wise decisions about investigations and be eloquent in how they express their findings. There will be opportunities to link to the lives of people through Science who have followed these values.

At St Patricks, we aim to encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at the school and beyond. The Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. At St Patrick’s we promote and develop a love of the subject, enabling all children to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams and aspirations.

Science has its own vocabulary and requires children to gain an understanding of three key areas of Science;Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

1.Biology -  Knowledge of living organisms and their habitats, to understand their own bodies and the changes they experience, an understanding and awareness of decisions related to health and wellbeing and recognise that changes have occurred overtime.

2. Physics - Knowledge of the Earth and the solar system, forces and gravity, Electricity and Light.

3. Chemistry - Knowledge of Materials and their properties, insulators and conductors, states of matters, the formation of rocks, soils and fossils.

As well as the key knowledge children are taught skills such as questioning, observing and measuring, planning and setting up different types of enquiries, identifying and classifying, performing tests, gathering and recording data, using equipment, reporting, presenting and communicating data/findings.

Children are offered a wide range of extra-curricular activities, visits, trips and visitors to complement and broaden the curriculum. These are purposeful and link with the knowledge being taught in class ensuring that children learn through varied and first hand experiences of the world around them.

Our approach to Science encourages inquisitive learners to respect and take responsibility for the world in which they live.
