PE CURRICULUM INTENT

Building the Kingdom Statement

PE enables children to unleash their full potential, both spiritual and physical, so that they transcend the limitations of the human body. PE provides a unique opportunity for students to recognise and appreciate the need for relationships based on trust and interdependence.  It promotes the sanctity of life – the appreciation of the beauty, dignity and reverence of the human person made in the image and likeness of God.

Within the Catholic life of our school, we are living out our values and virtues through our PE curriculum by teaching children respect and encouraging them to make discerning choices. Children learn to make the right choices, being attentive and compassionate during competitive situations.

At St Patrick’s, our aim is to equip children with the understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. We want all children to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills which will enhance life-long fitness and life choices. PE can challenge and promote self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. It can teach children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities. Within dance, it will allow children to explore their personal and spiritual identity. Through a variety of opportunities to compete competitively for all children, we aim to teach them respect, fairness and teamwork skills.

Our curriculum is supported by ‘Go4Goals’ coaching, where children will learn the skills needed to take part in a variety of competitive sports. Children are then able to build on these skills during their PE session with their class teacher.

KS1:

In Key Stage 1, children develop a love and enthusiasm for sport. They focus on developing their gross and fine motor skills to help them to master basic movements and apply this to team games. Children concentrate on skills such as: ball skills, gymnastics and hand-eye coordination.

KS2:

In Key Stage 2, children progress and build on the skills previously learnt by linking these to competitive situations. Children develop an understanding of how to improve their performances and work competitively. Skills are focused on ball games, athletics and, later in KS2, swimming skills.

We also work closely with CWSSP, which allows all children to take part in a range of competitions against schools in our local area. This helps to further build children’s competitive spirit, love for sport and, most importantly, our sportsmanship.

As well as this, through our participation in the Well-Being Ambassador scheme, we have a committee of Upper Key Stage 2 children who take on a leadership role in organising events and competitions within our school. These competitions aim to teach children about local sporting events (such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games) to further develop a love and enthusiasm for sport, whilst also focusing on children’s mental well-being.

At St Patrick’s, we offer a variety of sports clubs for children to take part in, including: football, multi-sports, gymnastics and more. Within these sessions, children work with a trained ‘Go For Goals’ coach to master and improve their skills to apply these to competitive situations.
